An SUV driver has been convicted of murder in the deaths of two passengers in a traffic accident during a Central Texas police chase.
The penalty phase continues Thursday in Belton for 23-year-old John Beasley Jr., who faces up to life in prison.
Jurors on Wednesday convicted Beasley in last April's wreck that left Tamojeane Tambakis and James Carl Broland dead. Investigators say Beasley's blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit for driving.
Beasley testified he'd been drinking at his mother's birthday party and his stepfather asked him to drive Tambakis and Broland to a pawn store.
Killeen police were on the lookout for the SUV after a store worker reported some suspicious customers. Beasley testified Broland had a weapon and forced him to drive away from officers.
