Distracted Teen Driver Dies In Wreck
HCSO: Justin Matthew Martinez Was On Cellphone, Talking To Friend In Another Vehicle
A distracted teenage driver was killed in a wreck on Wednesday.
Harris County sheriff's deputies said Justin Matthew Martinez, 18, was driving a Saturn Ion on Louetta Road near Haude Road about 9 p.m.
Investigators said Martinez was talking on his cellphone and was also talking out the driver's window to a vehicle in another lane.
Martinez did not notice that a vehicle in front of him had slowed down to make a turn, officials said. When he realized what was happening, he swerved to avoid hitting the car, overcorrected and ended up in oncoming traffic, detectives said.
Deputies said the driver of a Mitsubishi Outlander hit the Saturn.
Martinez, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, investigators said.
The two people inside the Mitsubishi were taken to a hospital in stable condition.
