HOUSTON -

First responders and community leaders gathered Tuesday night in downtown Houston to support the Fire Fighters Foundation.

"Answering the Call" was the name of the seventh annual event, which raises money to purchase tools, technology and equipment for several Houston area fire departments so they can better serve and protect the public.

Former Kemah Mayor Bill King, philanthropist Philamena Baird and Houston Fire Department Chief Terry Garisson welcomed and thanked guests for their generous support.

Since the foundation's inception, more than $1 million have been donated to the Houston Fire Department.

Donovan Campbell, a decorated military officer and best-selling author of "Joker One: A Marine Platoon's Story of Courage, Leadership and Brotherhood" served as the evening's guest speaker.

Some of the guests for the evening included: U.S. Federal Judge David Hittner, HFD Chief Rick Flannagan, State Rep. Carol Alvarado, George Hittner, Jim Grace, Cindy Clifford, Russ Frank and Jason Fuller.
