Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies say they are out in full force for St. Patrick's Day weekend.
St. Patrick's Day can be a fun time for many, but Assistant District Attorney Warren Diepraam said it can also be a deadly time.
So far this month, Diepraam said there have been close to 1,000 DWI arrests in the Houston area, which he said is a significant increase compared to January and February.
"You add spring break, you add St. Patrick's Day into the mix, which is a huge drinking holiday and you compound it with the Houston Livestock and Rodeo, we see our fatalities and DWI's shoot up by 20 percent," said Diepraam.
That's why this will also be a no refusal weekend. Deputies say they will pull over suspected drunk drivers, then a van will pull up.
Inside the van will be a nurse and a warrant signed by a judge to draw the driver's blood.
A DWI arrest can cost between $10,000 to $15,000.
