Deputies: Wanted woman dumps kid in gas station parking lot
A woman dumped a child in a gas station parking lot when deputies tried to question her, investigators said.
Montgomery County sheriff's deputies said the woman was walking with a small child along state Highway 242 near F.M. 1485 shortly before 7 a.m. on Monday. Motorists found it to be strange, so they called for help.
A deputy spotted the woman and child in the parking lot of a Shell gas station. The deputy determined that there was a warrant out for her arrest, but the woman insisted the warrant had been recalled. While the deputy was working to confirm that, they let her sit on a curb with the child.
"While doing that, the lady got up and started running," Lt. Dan Norris said. "Dropped the child on the ground and started running."
After taking care of the child, the deputy chased the woman down the embankment of Caney Creek, officials said. The woman jumped into the water and swam across the creek, but the deputy managed to catch up with her a short time later and take her into custody, detectives said.
As the deputy was walking her back to the creek, the woman appeared to have a seizure and collapsed, officials said. A rescue basket was sent down to safely get the woman out of the creek area and she was taken to Conroe Regional Hospital.
The woman's name has not been released. She will face additional charges of evading arrest and injury to a child.
The child was handed over to Child Protective Services.
