Prosecutors to seek death penalty for suspect in Austin officer shooting

AUSTIN, Texas -

Prosecutors will seek the death penalty against a man charged with killing an Austin police officer.

Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg said Tuesday that she would pursue the death penalty against Brandon Montgomery Daniel. Daniel is charged with capital murder in the shooting death of Senior Police Officer Jaime Padron.

Authorities say the 40-year-old Padron was called to a Walmart at around 2:30 a.m. on April 6 after a disturbance was reported.

Thousands of people attended a public memorial service for Padron in Austin.
