DWI suspect wrecks family's Christmas
Dad shuttles between two hospitals after wreck
Family devastated after DWI-related crash
A woman and her daughter were in the hospital Monday after a suspected drunk driver hit their car while driving home on Christmas Eve, Freeport police said.
Richard Williamson said he and his family decided to do something different for Christmas this year. So, he took his wife and three children down to a beach house on Surfside Beach. After an evening of Christmas shopping, dinner and grocery shopping, the family headed home.
While driving in the 1600 block of Highway 332, the family's minivan was hit by Andrew Scott, 27, who has been charged with a DWI, according to Freeport police.
Scott told officers he had more than five beers at Pier 30 and was headed back to assist the bartender there.
"He just turned right in front of me," Williamson said. "I just had a split-second to veer to the right and hit the brakes."
The accident sent Williamson's wife, Sherrie, a breast cancer survivor, to Memorial Hermann Hospital with a shattered tibia and fibula. Their 7-year-old daughter, Bethany, suffered a corneal abrasion, a concussion and fractured vertebra. She was taken to Texas Children's Hospital.
Since then, Richard Williamson has bounced back and forth between the two hospitals while also trying to give his other two children a good Christmas -- not exactly the holiday he had in mind.
"I hope he realizes the devastation he caused me and my family," Williamson said.
Scott had a mandatory blood draw at the scene of the crash. The test results could take several weeks.
