Couple receives $637,956.54 water bill
City says bill result of computer glitch
City apologizes for big water bill
A Texas City couple opened their water bill to discover it increased by 14,000 times from the month before.
"I couldn't believe it. I just couldn't believe," said Sherree Delisle.
Sherree and David Delisle received a bill of $637,956.54 for the month of January. Their average bill is $45.
"I opened the bill and I looked at it and I kept looking for the decimal. I kept looking. I kept thinking it has to be in the wrong place," said Sherree Delisle.
The couple went to city hall looking for answers.
"The lady was sick and I was told they would get back to me," said Sherree Delisle on Wednesday. "That was two days ago. So, I went back yesterday because if I didn't pay yesterday, the bill went up to $701,752.06, so I thought I better settle this."
The couple has only lived at the property for a year. They are hardly ever home as both work as long-haul truckers.
They hope they aren't the only ones laughing.
"That they get a good joke out of it, too, and fix the bill," said David Delisle.
Laura Boyd, the Director of Finance in Texas City, is aware of the bill. She said there was a problem with the software billing system, and that the city was working to correct the bill.
The computer glitch affected three different addresses, but the city said it was simply a glitch.
