Couple accused of abusing 7-year-old boy
Christopher Burrell, Savannah Johnson charged with injury to child
A couple has been accused of abusing a 7-year-old boy by hitting him with a shoe, cord, ruler, belt and their hands.
Christopher Burrell, 26, and Savannah Johnson, 26, have been charged with injury to a child.
Houston police said the 7-year-old went to school on Jan. 30 and an ambulance was called to take him to Texas Children's Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken arm, a broken hand, a black eye, a bruise on his head and several cuts. Doctors said the boy's injuries were a mix of new and old.
Detectives said the boy told them that Johnson, who he said was his stepmother, and Burrell, his father, hit him after he got into trouble at school. The boy said his father hit him in the face, used a ruler to hit his hands and both Burrell and Johnson hit him on his legs with a belt, police said.
Johnson's 6-year-old daughter told officials that she saw her mother hit the boy on the head with the heel of a shoe, investigators said. Police said she also told them that she saw the 7-year-old being hit with an electrical cord.
Police said Burrell admitted that he hit his son with a belt and Johnson admitted to hitting the boy with a shoe. Investigators said the couple did not have an explanation for the extent of the boy's injuries and claimed they only administered discipline.
