Students at North Forest High School got clear backpacks Tuesday after a student brought a gun to school and shot another student, officials said.
Warren Lewis, 18, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon last week after he fired five shots at another student during an argument, police said. A nearby student was shot in the leg.
Lewis said the student was constantly bullying him and that he feared for his life.
"This is an honor roll student, a 12th-grader scheduled to graduate in May," said Tanika Solomon, Lewis' attorney. "These are real threats to his life and his family's life."
Investigators said a few days after Lewis was arrested, someone shot up his mother's house.
The school district said they are taking extra precautions to make sure students are protected.
The clear backpacks will be passed out before the first bell.
District officials are still investigating how the gun got onto campus. The school has metal detectors, but they were shut off after the first bell. The metal detectors will now be used until 10 a.m.
