HOUSTON -

The woman convicted of murdering her cheating husband by running over him with her Mercedes-Benz said she still loves him -- and believes that he still loves her from beyond the grave.

In an interview granted to NBC's "Today Show" before her murder trial, Clara Harris said she thought her life was over when her husband, David Harris, told her he was in love with another woman.

"It was in an instant that my life changed 180 degrees," Clara Harris said.

She said she was "devastated, extremely guilty, very confused." But she said she was not angry. She says she wanted her orthodontist husband back.

"The main purpose or intention that I had as I was listening to him was to find out why? What did I fail him in?" Clara Harris said.

In the days after her husband's death, Clara Harris said that she kept the truth from their twin boys.

"The boys were asking, 'Where's daddy?' And I was telling them that he was in a business trip," she said. "They were asking, 'when's he going to come back?' and I couldn't answer them."

In other interviews, jurors Dan Walker and Veronica Oliveras said the evidence supported their verdicts. Oliveras said of David Harris -- "He's a good man who made a mistake."

Juror Dan Walker told News2Houston that he did feel sorry for Clara Harris.

"I feel sympathy and compassion for Clara, but no one ever asked what we feel about David and he lost his life," Walker said. "We had to separate that as jurors and we did, then made a decision to convict her of murder."

Walker said that serving as a juror in this trial was an experience that he doesn't want to have to go through again.

A Harris County jury sentenced Clara Harris to 20 years in prison Friday after finding her guilty of murdering her orthodontist husband, David Harris, 44, on the night of July 24 after a confrontation with him and his acknowledged lover, Gail Bridges, in the lobby of the Hilton Nasa Clear Lake, Nasa Road 1, in Nassau Bay.

Jurors deliberated for approximately five hours before returning the verdict. The panel answered "yes" on the question of whether the crime was committed as a result of "sudden passion," which is legally defined as the following:

  • Accused was provoked by the victim
  • Crime happened at the time of the offense
  • Provocation made an ordinary person so enraged that he or she was incapable of cool reflection

Under "sudden passion," jurors had the option of sentencing Harris from two to 20 years in prison, handing down the maximum sentence allowed.

Clara Harris was sentenced on her 11th wedding anniversary.

The jury panel consisted of nine women and three men, selected from a jury pool of 120 people.

Testimony began on Jan. 23.

She will be eligible for parole in 10 years.
