An Arkansas family's vacation ended tragically Monday afternoon when their Chevy Suburban flipped over in the middle of the Eastex Freeway at Parker Road, killing a five-year-old boy.
His mother, her two other children and a family friend survived the crash and were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, but five-year-old Trace Williams was killed when the vehicle rolled on top of him.
Police say the little boy was riding in the back seat when the right rear tire blew out.
A friend vacationing with the family was driving when it happened.
She lost control as it swerved into the center divider, then hit a light pole and rolled onto its roof.
The little boy was pinned underneath the wreckage.
The boy and his family left Corpus Christi earlier in the day and were driving home to Arkansas when the accident happened.
The survivors include the boy's younger sister and brother as well as his mother and the friend who was driving.
Police say the survivors' injuries are not life threatening.
It took hours for police to clear the wreckage.
Traffic was backed up for miles in the northbound lanes of the Eastex Freeway Monday.
