Celebrating Black History Month

HOUSTON -

The following events are being held in conjunction with Black History Month in Houston.

  • Visit the African American Library at the Gregory School: Located in Houston's historic Freedman's Town, the library is housed in what was once the Edgar M. Gregory School, which served as the first public school for African-Americans in Houston. As the first library of its kind in Houston and one of the few African-American libraries in the country, the African American Library at the Gregory School serves as a resource to preserve, promote, and celebrate the rich history and culture of African-Americans in Houston, the surrounding region, and the African Diaspora.   • Houston Community College's 2012 Black History Scholarship Gala will be held on Feb. 25 at the Hilton Americas. The guest speaker is Vanessa Williams: www.hccs.edu/blackhistory
  • Preserving A Legacy: A Tribute to Houston's Blues will take place on Feb. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Jones Hall. It will feature Grady Gaines & the Texas Upsetters, guitarist Milton Hopkins and Texas Johnny Brown, vocalists Trudy Lynn and Ray Brown, and the Kashmere Reunion Stage Band: www.spahouston.org/
