Carjack and metal theft suspect caught after police chase
A man suspected of a carjacking and stealing brass rings from sprinklers was arrested after a police chase in west Houston.
Houston police said they received a call around 3 a.m. Thursday about two suspicious vehicles in the 1900 block of Kirsten in the Memorial area.
Homeowners said a couple of men were stealing brass rings off sprinkler heads in their front lawns. Minutes later, police arrived and spotted one of the suspects, Hector Leon, in an SUV that was reported stolen, officials said. A police chase ensued.
Officers said Leon, 20, drove through several red lights during the high-speed chase.
Leon ditched the SUV near Memorial and Dairy Ashford and tried to make a run for it, officials said.
"He took off running and the officer gave chase and eventually caught him," Sgt. Dennis Gonzales said.
Police said in addition to the stolen vehicle, they found a man's wallet, several stolen cellphones and the brass rings.
Leon was also wanted in connection with a carjacking a couple of hours earlier. Officers said at 1 a.m., Leon forced a driver out of his vehicle at gunpoint in the 1300 block of Trail Hollow. He stole the victim's keys, wallet and cellphone, police said.
Investigators said three others remain on the loose.
