Cancer patient gets hospital room makeover

HOUSTON -

A young cancer patient got a fun surprise Wednesday.

Anali Carrasco, 12, is getting treatment for leukemia at Texas Children's Cancer Center.

Her hospital room is her home away from home, but it got a personal touch thanks to volunteers with the Dec My Room program.

Anali's room now has a 1970s disco theme, complete with peace signs and disco balls.

"It was amazing to watch this little girl come and be so excited and have a really pretty, comfortable room," volunteer Sue Smith said.

The Dec My Room program began decorating rooms at the hospital in 2007.

"It's something we're extremely proud of," Dr. David Poplack said. "It helps kids who are in their rooms for a prolonged period of time."

A children's disco party was held at the hospital to kick off An Evening with Disco Legends event, featuring the Pointer Sisters, Gloria Gaynor and more at the George R. Brown Convention Center on Feb. 4.
