A van license plate found at the scene of a Houston-area hit-and-run crash that killed a bicycle rider has led to a DWI arrest, investigators said Tuesday.
Frank Corona Jr., 53, was cycling southbound on Jones Road at Fallbrook at 11:30 p.m. Monday when a driver slammed into him, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said.
Investigators said the driver, Jared James Thomas, 36, took off but was apprehended a short time later because the license plate fell off the vehicle his father had borrowed from a friend.
"We found that (the driver) was intoxicated. We have contacted the District Attorney and the D.A. has accepted charges for failure to stop and render aid at a crash scene while intoxicated," said Sgt S. Wolverton with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "We found the driver of the van inside his residence, asleep in the stairway with the keys to his van under his body."
Deputies said Thomas became violent when they tried to arrest him.
"They continued to try and wake him up and he stood up and threatened them. That's when he was tasered," Wolverton said.
Thomas is being held in the Harris County Jail with bond set at $35,000. He has been charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to stop and render aid.
Thomas said he did not know he hit anything or anyone, detectives said.
Corona died from his injuries.
