BMX champion Kyle Bennett killed in car crash
Three-time BMX world champion and Olympian Kyle Bennett died in a car crash on Sunday night.
Police said Bennett, 33, was heading to his fiance's house in Conroe when he lost control of his vehicle on Highway 105. According to investigators, Bennett's truck left the road, went through a ditch, hit an iron fence, and flipped over outside a home on the highway. Bennett died at the scene.
Bennett was a three-time BMX world champion and won an automatic spot on the first U.S. BMX Olympic team in 2008.
In a statement, USA Cycling CEO Steve Johnson said Bennett was a pioneer in Olympic BMX cycling and an inspiration to those who knew him.
Hours after the accident, officials said hundreds of people gathered outside the Kyle Bennett Armadillo BMX Park to hold a vigil.
Bennett is survived by his fiancé and a young daughter.
