BARC reduces adoption fees this weekend

HOUSTON -

The Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care is reducing adoption fees to continue its momentum in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge.

Cat/kitten adoption fees will be reduced to $10 and dog/puppy adoption fees to $20 from 12 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

There are hundreds of pets available at BARC's facility, 3200 Carr Street.

BARC is also celebrating Petco's national adoption weekend August 11 - 12 by offering offsite adoption events at two local Petco locations. Every Saturday, BARC holds an adoption event at the Petco on state Highway 6 North and F.M. 529 in Copperfield from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The animal shelter also holds an adoption event every Sunday at the Petco located at Westheimer and Wilcrest from 1 to 5 p.m. Dogs and puppies are available for a $20 adoption fee and cats and kittens are available for a $10 adoption fee.

BARC also hosts weekly adoption events at the PetSmart on the Northwest Freeway near Hollister and the Galleria Mall from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday. Dogs/puppies can be adopted for $20 and cats/kittens can be adopted for $10.

"We started the ASPCA $100,000 Challenge with great momentum and we are doing everything we can to continue increasing adoptions and saving lives throughout the Challenge," said Alfred Moran, director of the Administration & Regulatory Affairs Department, which oversees BARC. "We are trying to provide as many opportunities as possible -- through onsite and offsite adoption events -- for Houstonians to adopt from BARC. And, if we win the Challenge, we will purchase a mobile adoption unit that will allow us to expand our offsite adoption events to the entire city of Houston."

Shelters across the country are competing to save the lives of pets in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. Last year's grand prize winner was Austin Pets Alive! The organization earned $100,000 for saving 850 dogs and cats August through October.
