Police are searching for a man who robbed a La Porte discount store at gunpoint.
La Porte police said the man held up the Dollar General store in the 1200 block of Broadway about 8:40 p.m. Thursday.
Detectives said the man pulled out a gun and demanded money from the registers.
"The suspect went ahead and advised her she had three seconds to respond," Sgt. John Krueger said. "The clerk turned around to a nearby manager and advised her of what's going on. The manager went ahead and started immediately retrieving all the cash from a nearby register."
Customers were inside the store at the time of the robbery. Some even approached the register while the gunman was there.
"The suspect could have easily turned around and shot at any one of the customers or employees," Krueger said. "That's why we're especially commending the clerk and manager for remaining calm. Whether or not they realized it, they really helped out everyone."
The man got away with about $230, police said.
The robber was described as black and about 5 feet 6 inches with a stocky build and closely shaved dark-colored hair.
Anyone with information is asked to call La Porte police at 281-842-3173 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
