This week on Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall, Houston Chief of Police Charles McClelland Jr. and Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia are guests at a critical time in southeast Texas.
In the week after several students were stabbed while attending Lone Star College,Garcia and McClelland talk about the response to that incident, what worked well and how improvement can be made in future such incidents.
There is a genuine friendship between both men, who began their police careers within a few years of each other with the Houston Police Department. They took different paths to the top, but both spent many years as rank and file patrol officers before attaining their current positions.
Garcia is a few months into his second term as Harris County sheriff while McClelland is at the three-year mark as leader of the one of the largest police departments in the United States.
Topics this day include training for incidents like what took place at Lone Star College, the use of cameras as a tool on campus and on the streets of Houston, the biggest challenges facing law enforcement in southeast Texas what is being done to deal with them.
Also discussed are the ways both agencies are using social media to reach out to get help from the community in the fight against crime.
Also this week, Rania Mankarious, the new executive director of Houston Crime Stoppers, stops by. Mankarious takes over for Katherine Cabaniss, who was appointed to a Judge's position. Mankarious talks about the new and aggressive direction the agency continues to take as it works to put criminals behind bars with the direct help of the community.
