Agents find locked room filled with guns, cash
Thousands of dollars in cash and several weapons were found inside a locked room during a raid by federal agents at a southeast Houston home.
Documents filed in Houston federal court read the raid took place on Jan. 9 at a home on Valley Kings Drive near Kingspoint.
"Scary because this is a neighborhood with children. This is a family neighborhood, it's very quiet around here," said a neighbor who did not want to be identified. "They never spoke to anyone in the neighborhood."
Federal agents wrote Jorge Eduardo Gonzalez had been under surveillance and was stopped by a Houston police officer for driving 55 miles an hour in a 35 mph zone.
Court documents read the officer noticed the steering column on the car driven by Gonzalez appeared to have a "defect" on the steering wheel. Agents wrote when the officer searched the car, a stolen gun and $13,912 were discovered.
Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement then went to Gonzalez's home and spoke to his wife. Federal agents wrote Gonzalez's wife told them her husband had a "locked room" in the house he never let anyone inside.
Agents wrote Gonzalez's wife told them, "Her husband always sleeps in the locked room. He does not sleep in the master bedroom upstairs because, according to her husband, he does not like the mattress in their room. He sleeps on an inflatable mattress in the locked room."
Agents wrote Gonzalez's wife added he would only allow her to "stay by the doorway, just far enough into the room where he can hand her his dirty laundry and she can hand him his clean clothes."
Agents obtained a search warrant for that room after stating a police dog detected the odor of narcotics. Federal agents stated when they entered the room they discovered six guns, one of which was stolen, 270 rounds of ammunition and $52,500 in cash.
Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms then joined the investigation because of the guns.
Gonzalez has been charged with being an illegal immigrant in possession of a weapon. Federal agents wrote he refused to answer their questions. Federal agents also stated Gonzalez's wife told them she and her husband are both from Mexico and are in the United States illegally.
Neither officials from ICE nor the ATF would comment on the arrest citing an ongoing investigation.
