HOUSTON -

Unfortunately, some people use storms as an excuse to charge ridiculously high prices for things like food, gas, and hotel lodging. It's called price gouging.

It takes a disaster declaration from the governor to activate laws that prohibit price gouging. Gov. Rick Perry hasn't declared a disaster in southeast Texas, but the Attorney General's office is watching out for folks evacuating to Texas.

If you believe you've been charged too much for food, gas or lodging, file a complaint at www.oag.state.tx.us/forms/cpd/form.php. You can also call (800) 252-8011.

Keep in mind that there are other reasons prices may go up. The increased demand for gas means higher prices at the pump; but the AG's office will investigate if you file a report.
