Bond Denied For Man Accused Of Killing Police Officer

Funeral Services Set

UPDATED: 5:42 pm CDT September 25, 2006

A judge denied bond for a man accused of killing a Houston police officer, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Houston police said Juan Leonardo Quintero, 32, shot and killed Officer Rodney Johnson during a traffic stop on Thursday.

Quintero's common law wife was in the courtroom to hear the charges.

"She feels remorse for the family," an unidentified friend said. "She can't control what he did."

Police said Quintero used his common law's wife gun in the killing.

Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal, who is prosecuting the case himself, said the motive for the shooting is unclear.

"He was in the back seat of a police car that's got a full cage," Rosenthal said. "There wasn't any way that he was going to get out of there. Why he would shoot an officer, and basically have to wait for other officers to come arrest him, is bizarre."

Investigators said Quintero used a 9 mm handgun he had hidden in his waistband to shoot Johnson in the head multiple times.

Officials said the first officers to arrive at the scene found Quintero in the handcuffed in the back seat of Johnson's patrol car, with a gun in his hand.

Investigators said Quintero is in the United States illegally. Officials said he was deported after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a child in 1996.

Funeral Services Finalized

Funeral services have been finalized for Johnson.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at the Grace Community Church, located at 14505 Gulf Freeway, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Burial will follow at the Houston National Cemetery, located at 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive.
