Former TSU President Returns As Instructor

POSTED: Wednesday, August 30, 2006
UPDATED: 10:39 am CDT August 30, 2006

The recently fired president of Texas Southern University returned to the school to teach classes, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Priscilla Slade is a tenured assistant professor of business at the university.

Slade was fired as president in June after she was accused of improperly spending public funds on personal items for her home.

"Even though Dr. Priscilla Slade was terminated as President of Texas Southern University by the Board of Regents, she still retains her status as a tenured professor of the University," read a statement released by TSU. "Tenure is a property right and a lifetime appointment."

A spokeswoman for the university said she did not know what courses Slade would be teaching.

Slade was indicted in August on two criminal charges of misapplication of fiduciary property.

Three other university officials were indicted on similar charges.

If convicted, it is possible Slade could lose her tenure.

"The TSU Faculty Manual outlines the process and conditions for which tenure is granted or removed," the statement from TSU read.
