HOUSTON -- The new police chase policy announced by the Houston Police Department has been put on hold, officials told KPRC Local 2.
Police Chief Harold Hurtt and Houston Police Officer's Union President Hans Marticiuc met over the weekend to hash out an agreement.
The arbitrated meeting was held at the request of Houston Mayor Bill White.
"We've decided to hold the pursuit policy in abeyance until we can get it on the agenda of the Public Safety subcommittee," Hurtt said. "We'll have discussons where we'll allow officers, as well as citizens and arrested individuals, to have additional comments."
The union was angry that it was not included in discussions before the new policy was set.
"I would like to publicly acknowledge Chief Hurtt for his willingness to put the brakes on a controversial pursuit policy until we have some further discussion and further input," Marticiuc said.
The new policy prohibited officers from chasing after persons suspected of committing a class C violation, unless it was known that the driver is a known felon.
