Thousands Attend Houston Job Fair

POSTED: Tuesday, August 15, 2006
UPDATED: 12:07 pm CDT August 15, 2006

Thousands of Houstonians attended a job fair at the George R. Brown Convention Center Tuesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

About 145 companies are looking to fill more than 5,300 openings at the fair, called Destination Occupation.

Job seekers searching for all types of work showed up at the convention center.

"What are you hoping to find?" KPRC's Joel Eisenbaum asked.

"Customer service … a position in customer service, call centers, data entry," an attendee said.

Destination Occupation was first held last year to help Hurricane Katrina evacuees find work.

"If somebody is out there and they're unemployed and want to get back on their feet, have the dignity of self-sufficiency in a job, George R. Brown is the place to be today," Houston Mayor Bill White said.

There are job openings for hospitals, law enforcement, secretarial, technology and more. About 4,800 of the available positions are in Houston. The rest are mainly in Louisiana.

The job fair is free and open to everyone. Job seekers are encouraged to bring resumes.

It will be open at Exhibit Hall B until 6 p.m.

For more information, visit www.destinationoccupation.com or call 281-820-8699.
