Attorney: McCombs 'Devastated' About Glover's Death

Family In Disbelief Over Alleged Motive In Teen's Death

One of the teens accused of killing Ashton Glover, 16, said he "feels terrible" about what happened, his attorney told KPRC Local 2.

Matthew McCombs, 18, appeared in Fort Bend County court for an arraignment Tuesday.

The judge read McCombs his rights and set his bail at $1 million.

"He's devastated about this. He's really sorry for what's happened in this case. He feels terrible," said Ira Chenken, McCombs' attorney. "If any of you are parents, and something like this happened to your child, you could just imagine how devastated the family is."

Chenken, who was hired by McCombs' parents, spoke with McCombs for about an hour.

"(McCombs' parents) feel terrible for the girl and we have sympathy for the family," Chenken said.

Chenken said it is unlikely McCombs will bond out of jail.

"He's considered a pariah in this community," Chenken said. "His safest place is probably this jail."

Matthew McCombs arrived in Fort Bend County Monday afternoon after he waived extradition from Michigan, where he and Sean Brown were captured while trying to cross the U.S.-Canada border into Ontario.

McCombs and Brown, both 18, were charged with murder in the death of Glover on Wednesday.

Investigators said McCombs and Brown took Glover to a construction site to go off-roading, and walked around for a few minutes before McCombs pulled a gun and shot Glover in the head.

Officers said they left her body in the dirt and went to eat breakfast at an IHOP in Sugar Land and then returned to bury her body.

Glover was last seen at the It's A Grind coffee shop on Sweetwater Boulevard in Sugar Land on July 7. She was found dead by a construction crew laying utility lines off of Oil Field Road and Thompson's Ferry Road on July 10.

Brown is fighting extradition, but authorities hope to bring him back to Texas soon. Another hearing will be held next month.

Family In Shock Over Alleged Motive

Glover's family is in shock over the reason one of her accused killers gave for her death.

"The motive, when asked directly, 'Why did you do that?,' his statement was, 'Morbid curiosity,'" Fort Bend County Sheriff Milton Wright said.

This revelation shocked Glover's mother, Sue Smith.

"This is why she has no comment right now," said Carla Hensley, Glover's aunt. "She is speechless."

"We just are having a feeling where we feel some sense of calm, acceptance," Hensley said. "Then you get a 15-pound bowling ball in the gut. Just senseless."

Smith waited outside the Fort Bend County jail Monday, hoping to catch a glimpse of McCombs through the dark windows of the sheriff's cars.

"I just miss my baby," Smith said. "I just want justice to be served. That's all I want."

Wright said McCombs implicated Brown in the killing but admitted to pulling the trigger.

"The pistol that we recovered in the search warrant at McCombs' house is indeed the murder weapon," Wright said. "Mr. McCombs pulled the trigger (with a) 22-32. It's an old model replica, a frontier model, an old pistol. You can still buy ammunition for it, I think, but those guns have been out of production for some time."

He said that McCombs stole the gun from a friend's grandmother's house in Kerrville.

Wright did not elaborate on the statement or motive in order to not jeopardize the case. He also would not say why Glover was the victim.

"I'll have to stop with the statement made -- morbid curiosity. Of course, there's more answers to that, but, after conferring with the district attorney and others, they requested that we not go beyond that," he said.

Wright said Glover was shot in the head on July 7 in the field where she was found three days later.

"We were talking to the district attorney earlier, and I don't believe it's going to reach, at this point, the level of a capital murder," Wright said.

"I can't even wrap my brain around that idea that you could do that," Hensley said.

Hensley wanted to say much more, but chose not to out of respect for Glover.

"I am honored to be this child's aunt," Hensley said.
