HOUSTON -- The FBI hopes the public can help stop a serial bank robber who is known for coordinating his clothing with his hats, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.
The man dubbed the "Dapper Bandit" robbed his first bank on May 31 at a Washington Mutual branch in southwest Houston, officials said.
Surveillance video showed the robbery suspect wearing a variety of "Gilligan-type" hats, including black to match black pants, a blue hat to match a blue shirt, a blue-striped hat to match a blue-striped shirt, and a khaki hat to match his shirt.
"It's a unique style of hat. It's a Gilligan's or fishermen's style of hat. He wears a different one in each robbery, but each time, they're color-coordinated," FBI Special Agent Shauna Dunlap said. "He's robbing these banks in broad daylight. He's robbing banks in grocery stores where there are children, women and families in these stores."
Officials said the Dapper Bandit brings his own bank bag to carry his loot.
"He did come in with a Washington Mutual bank bag and he's carried that in to previous robberies, and so that may be something that someone may recognize," Dunlap said.
He is suspected of committing four robberies.
The robber is described as a man with a dark complexion, between 5 feet 8 inches and 6 feet tall, 20 to 30 years old with a muscular build, goatee and mustache.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS or the FBI at 713-693-5000.
