Police Said They Believe Teen Knew Her Killer

2 'Persons Of Interest' Sought

POSTED: Tuesday, July 11, 2006
UPDATED: 6:06 pm CDT July 11, 2006

The search for a missing teen turned into a search for a killer Tuesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Ashton Glover, 16, was last seen early Saturday at the It's A Grind coffee shop on Sweetwater Boulevard in Sugar Land.

Glover was found dead by a construction crew laying utility lines off of Oil Field Road and Thompson's Ferry Road just before noon Monday.

Investigators said they believe Glover knew her killer.

"All indications, at this point, is that it's someone that she knew," Fort Bend County Sheriff Milton Wright said.

Authorities said they were looking for two persons of interest in the case, but did not elaborate.

Officials said they do not have a motive for the murder. They said they believe whoever killed Glover panicked.

"It was hasty. It was like a panic to get rid of the body or hide the body. I don't think it was well-planned. I think it was something that was hastily worked on," Wright said.

Authorities said Glover's truck was recovered Monday evening, about five miles from where her body was found.

Surveillance video from the coffee shop showed that Glover left her truck in the parking lot before she departed with friends.

Witnesses said she left willingly with at least two friends after they went off-roading.

Investigators said someone later went back to the coffee shop and moved Glover's truck to a neighborhood where police found it. The truck is being searched for clues.

Surveillance video showed someone getting into the truck and driving off, but the quality of the video is poor and it's difficult to determine the driver's gender, according to authorities.

The Texas Rangers are also helping in the investigation.

Wright said he is confident the case will be solved.

"This morning, there was a couple of good leads that came in that they're pursuing that does look promising," he said. "I'm pretty confident this case will be solved pretty quick."

An autopsy was conducted to determine Glover's cause of death. The autopsy report said she was not sexually assaulted, the but the cause of death was not released.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS.

Victim's Mother Wants Justice

Glover's mother is still in shock over her daughter's death, 24 hours after hearing the news.

Video: Mother Overwhelmed By Grief

"She was a beautiful girl and she had a lot to offer in this world, and I wasn't done loving her," Sue Smith said.

Smith said she has to take medication to sleep and said that she is so devastated she sometimes forgets to breathe.

"I won't get to see her graduate, have babies, get married, and she would have been the most awesome mom because when she was born, she just had that motherly nature about her," she said.

Smith wanted to thank all the volunteers who searched and prayed for her daughter.

"People who knew Ashton and people that didn't even know Ashton that gave up their time and their efforts to help come and find her -- that means so, so much to me," she said.

But the family's gratitude and grief is mixed with rage and a demand for justice to find the killer.

"I've made eye contact with those detectives and they have promised me they will not rest until they're found," Smith said. "I'm trusting them on that. I want to skin (the killer) alive. Now, could I really follow through with that? No. But I am just so enraged that someone could take my baby from me."

"They have destroyed us. They have destroyed us," said Jean Johnson, Glover's grandmother.

A memorial fund was set up in Glover's name. Donations can be made at any Amegy Bank branch.

Family, Friends Hold Prayer Vigil

Friends and family began the long process of saying goodbye to Glover at a candlelight vigil Monday night..

The vigil was held at the First Colony Church of Christ in Sugar Land, where Glover attended church.

"We come tonight with a bucketful of wounded emotions and questions," senior minister Ronnie Norman said. "It is a sad day."

Hundreds filled the church asking for strength for a grieving family.

"I pray your richest blessings upon the Glover family," one man said.

The day started with prayers of hope as volunteers fanned out across Fort Bend County to search for Glover.

"God, we want her back," one volunteer said. "We just pray, Lord, that you are keeping her safe."

The search ended just before noon after the discovery was made.

Glover's father shared his emotions on the discovery shortly after officials confirmed the body was his daughter.

"I lost an angel," said Terry Glover. "I don't know how I'm going to make it without her, but I'll make it."

He had a message for whoever hurt his daughter.

"It takes a messed-up individual to do what they've done," Glover said. "I really hope you get what you deserve."
