PENN HILLS, Pa. -- A 7-week-old pit bull puppy was freed on Thursday after spending the morning stuck in a sewer pipe in Penn Hills, Pa.
The owner, who has named the dog Sewer, heard the crying at 3 a.m. and traced the sounds to the sewer pipe.
Rescue crews had to use a backhoe to dig a hole 8 feet deep.
Then, a plumber took the pipe apart, freeing the puppy.
The puppy got stuck head first in a 6-inch sanitary pipe in the owner's back yard.
It took more than four hours to dig the puppy out. A landscaper working in the area loaned police the backhoe.
The puppy comes from a litter of four. The owner was going to give the dog away, but now she may keep the pup.
