An accident that caused an 18-wheeler to burst into flames shut down all outbound lanes of the Katy Freeway on Thursday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The North American Van Lines truck caught fire shortly after 2 p.m. on westbound Interstate 10 near Gessner Road.

Officials said the big rig struck the side barrier of the high-occupancy vehicle lane as it tried to exit onto the main lanes, causing the wreck. The driver and passenger were able to escape to safety before the 18-wheeler caught fire.

All outbound lanes of the freeway were closed to traffic until about 8 p.m. Thursday. By 5 p.m., one westbound lane was open to traffic.

The big rig was carrying furniture and boxes. Fire officials said the fire spread so quickly because the truck was densely packed.

Special machinery was brought in to remove the debris.
