HOUSTON -- Victims of Monday's floods showed up at assistance centers Wednesday expecting financial help but left empty-handed, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Two temporary citizen-assistance offices were open to help people relocate after the flood.
Dozens of residents were disappointed when all they got were phone numbers.
"(It's) a waste of time and a waste of my gas," flood victim Geraldine Lockett said.
Even though Monday's floodwaters were a disaster to many families, Harris County was not declared a disaster area -- meaning its residents will receive no federal aid.
"At this point in time, there's no financial assistance available," a city official said.
That did not sit well with many flood victims.
"We can't put our kids on the floor because of all the water damage and stuff. My kids are sleeping on a kitchen table," Kathy Scholes said.
"There's water all over the floor and I don't want to get wet. And it smells really, really bad," Cory Scholes said.
The American Red Cross handed out cleaning kits to flood victims to fight one of the biggest concerns -- toxic mold.
The aid centers, located at Fire Station 94, 235 El Dorado Blvd., and at Sunnyside Multi-Service Center, 4605 Wilmington, will be open until Friday.
They are only providing contact information for existing shelters and other aid organizations.
Those in need can register with the American Red Cross by calling 1-866-GET-INFO.
Once they are registered, they will be put in contact with a Houston representative to evaluate each financial request on a case-by-case basis. On average, a family will get up to $700 in financial aid.
