HOUSTON -- A fiery accident involving eight vehicles shut down the Katy Freeway for hours Thursday, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Officials said the accident happened at about 11:15 a.m. on Interstate 10 inbound near Highway 6. The lanes reopened shortly after 4 p.m.
A Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constable on a motorcycle was escorting a wide truck and shut down one outside lane of the freeway. But, he said, drivers in other lanes also stopped, including a sport utility vehicle. The driver of a truck could not stop in time and slammed into the SUV, igniting a fire.
"I was the last person to actually stop. A couple of cars behind me and the tractor-trailer just plowed us. I'm blessed to be alive," witness John Bankey said.
"I remember going over the rail and coming back down and then when I opened my eyes, I just saw a car in front of us with flames, so I just jumped out of my truck," witness Javier Valdez said.
A total of eight vehicles were involved in the wreck, including the motorcycle officer who was hit by an exhaust pipe. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
A person inside the vehicle that caught fire died at the scene.
Traffic was backed up for miles in the area.
Officials said the freeway was shut down for so long in order for investigators to get all the measurements and details needed to complete the investigation.
