HOUSTON -- A mother and father thought they were getting the cremated remains of their stillborn baby in May 2005.
It is unknown whose remains they actually received.
The infant, Faith Bell, was discovered a few days later at a Crosby crematory that is not connected with any wrongdoing.
An employee found Faith wrapped in a sack and stuffed inside the pant leg of an adult scheduled for cremation.
Officials said one theory is the baby was in the pants leg to save the funeral director the $50 cost of cremation.
"That employee's fingerprints were found on that bag and mine weren't," said Stephanie Barkley, a funeral director who was convicted of abusing a corpse. "Nobody's even mentioning that. I've told them from the beginning that he was not instructed to do so and I didn't do anything like that. I know better. Fifty dollars -- there's no logic."
Barkley said it was an honest mistake made by an assistant.
"The employee that did it made an honest mistake. He did not know that you couldn't do it. He just knew that she was so tiny and he knew what the cremation container was. He felt like he didn't want her just rolling around in the box by herself."
Faith Bell was eventually properly cremated.
Barkley has surrendered her funeral director's license, but is eligible to reapply again in two years. She is currently on probation for the criminal charge.
Barkley may face a fine of $14,500 by the Texas Funeral Services Commission.
