Family Declares Man Dead, Finds Him Alive

Family Accidentally Misidentified Body

UPDATED: 1:03 pm CDT June 7, 2006

Family members identified an accident victim as their loved one, but were surprised when they found him alive and well, KPRC Local 2 reported.

A man was found dead beside a bicycle along Loop 494 near F.M. 1485 Monday morning.

"He looked like my son," Clyde Knox said. "His socks had holes in them. His shoes looked the same."

Clyde Knox and another one of his sons both told the justice of the peace that the body was his son, Billy.

The family started to make funeral plans. They called everyone together – even the minister.

Then Billy showed up.

"You're alive, you're alive," Billy's sister, Lisa Jackson said. "He's like, 'what are you talking about?' You're supposed to be dead!"

Jackson found Billy asleep in her house.

Jackson had to tell the rest of the family – and stop the funeral plans.

"I thought I'd seen a ghost," Clyde Knox said. "I had to hug him. My hand didn't go through him. He wasn't a ghost. He was alive."

Billy had been at his girlfriend's house most of the time.

The justice of the peace said that he plans to check a victim's wallet next time.

"I felt it would be distasteful to rifle through his belongings with those two people there to identify him already," Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace James Metts said. "That's why it wasn't done at that time."

Billy's family now knows what the true victim's family is going through.

"I hate for the other people, but I'm rejoicing inside because I got mine," said Clyde Knox. "Now there's a mom and dad who don't have theirs. I'm really praying for them."

Officials identified the man who died as Ronnie Franklin, 45, of New Caney.
