4-Alarm Fire Continues To Smolder

Heavy Smoke Was Visible For Miles

POSTED: Thursday, May 25, 2006

Firefighters are still on the scene of a four-alarm fire that erupted at a vacant southwest Houston apartment complex Wednesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

"We're just moving rubble around now, putting out hot spots," District Chief Mike Stuckey said.

Officials expect crews to be on the scene for most of Thursday.

The fire started at the complex, formerly named Regency Arms, on San Felipe Street at Winrock Boulevard at about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday.

The black smoke could be seen for miles.

It took about four hours for 125 firefighters to extinguish the flames.

Firefighters had to use hydrants from surrounding neighborhoods to get extra water to fight the flames. They had to stretch hoses across the bayous to blast water from all different angles.

Several streets in the immediate area were closed to traffic for hours. The streets opened at about 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, in time for the morning's rush hour traffic.

The complex was scheduled for demolition when the blaze broke out.

Area residents said the apartment complex had been closed for more than a year.

One firefighter suffered an allergic reaction when bees stung him. No other injuries were reported.

Arson investigators are working to determine the cause.
