Youth Baseball Coach Charged With Indecency With Child

School District Employee Placed On Leave

POSTED: Friday, May 12, 2006

A youth baseball coach and school district employee was arrested and charged with indecency of a child, KPRC Local reported Friday.

Troy Anthony West, 35, works for the Texas City Independent School District as a technology specialist. He's also a coach for the Pony Colt baseball team.

Police said West had sexual contact with a 14-year-old Texas City boy. The allegation was made in April, officials said. Investigators did not provide specifics and would only say it was committed during a solo activity with the teenager. Officials said it was not related to any of his activities at local schools or the Pony Colt league.

West was arrested at his home Tuesday. He was placed on administrative leave by the school district and told not to return to any campus or attend any school-related activity.

Friends and neighbors were shocked.

"He hangs out here, comes over and plays with my boys -- plays basketball and hangs out with my family. I've never had any problem with him. He's always been a good guy, real respectful," neighbor Christine Montgomery said.

She is having a tough time believing the allegations.

"I don't believe that they're true, but how can I tell a parent not to believe their child?" Montgomery said.

"He's a great role model and all the kids look up to him. He's worked in the school district for a lot of years. He's a great guy," friend Amy Catching said.

"(I just hope) it all worked out for him and comes out to be the best," Montgomery said.

West was released on a $40,000 bond.
