HOUSTON -- One worker died and two others were injured Wednesday when a crane collapsed in northeast Houston, knocking out power to a hospital, KPRC Local 2 reported.
The crane toppled over shortly after 10 a.m. on the North Loop at Homestead, dumping the workers from a bucket, about 50 or 60 feet up, as they tried to work on a highway billboard.
The crane also hit a power line that provided service to 150 CenterPoint customers, including Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital, knocking out electricity to the hospital for a short time. The hospital operated on its backup generators until power was restored.
The three workers were transported to Ben Taub Hospital with massive injuries and electrical burns, according to authorities.
One of the workers later died. The other two are listed in serious condition.
Their names have not been released.
Houston police Sergeant D.J. Crain says it appeared the weight of the crane apparently shifted and part of the equipment slipped down in the mud -- causing the crane to tip.
