HPD Unveils New Mobile Command Center

Mobile Unit To Operate 24 Hours A Day

POSTED: Thursday, April 27, 2006

Houston police hope a new mobile command center will help fight crime in the city's most dangerous neighborhoods, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.

U-net, which stands for Unified Neighborhood Enhancement Team, is a police station on wheels where officers can access information and process criminals.

Officials said the mobile command post would direct logistics for more efficient crime fighting in three southwest Houston police districts that have experienced the largest rise in violent crime.

HPD personnel will operate it 24 hours a day.

"With this effort we will empower residents to exhibit a 'take back our neighborhood' mentality," Police Chief Harold Hurtt said. "We will be asking our religious and community leaders to visit the command post and help spread this message through walking and talking with residents."

U-net was unveiled Wednesday at a substation on Fondren and West Bellfort in southwest Houston.
