HOUSTON -- A Houston company was raided Wednesday as part of a nationwide crackdown on illegal immigrants, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Federal agents descended on two locations of
IFCO Systems -- 6829 Flintrock Road near West Little York in northwest Harris County and 4900 North McCarty Road in northeast Houston.
The sweeps began shortly before 9 a.m. Homeland Security buses left the facilities hours later with dozens of suspected undocumented workers on board. The exact number was not released.
Maria Gomez's husband and several other family members were among those taken to a federal detention center.
"Yes, I'm worried because I don't know what they're going to do to (my husband)," she said.
Gomez said her brother-in-law needs his seizure medication, which she could not get to him.
"They said they can't let me in there because I don't have the prescription to give him the medicine," she said.
Gomez said her husband's papers are being processed.
"They're not even criminals. They're just here to work," she said.
Jamie E. Zuieback, with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, issued the following statement:
"Today's arrests and detentions are part of an ongoing ICE worksite enforcement investigation. Because the enforcement actions are ongoing, we are unable to provide further details on the operation at this time. We should have additional information available for you (Thursday)."
According to its
Web site, IFCO Systems is an international logistics service provider with more than 150 locations worldwide. IFCO Systems operates a pool of more than 75 million RPCs (Reusable Plastic Containers) globally, which are used primarily to transport fresh produce from producers to leading grocery retailers.
IFCO officials would not comment to KPRC.
