Shot Shatters School Bus Window

UPDATED: 9:23 am CDT April 19, 2006

Someone fired a shot at a Houston Independent School District bus Tuesday with a busload of students on board, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The school bus was traveling on Ashville near Sunbeam in southeast Houston shortly before 5 p.m. when the bullet shattered a window.

Thirty students from Johnston Middle School and Westbury High School were on the bus. No one was seriously injured. Two middle school students suffered minor cuts and were treated at the scene. A third middle school student was treated for hyperventilation.

“It was like a bag of chips popping or something. But, then I saw all the glass shattering, so I know it was the window,” a student said.

An 11-year-old was sitting near the window that shattered.

“I never thought this would happen to me,” Kendrea Holmes said.

The shooter escaped. It is not yet known if the gunman intended to fire at the bus or if there was another target.

A bullet fragment was recovered from the scene.

The HISD police department is investigating, along with the Houston Police Department.
