A chain-reaction accident that erupted into a fireball on a busy Houston freeway Thursday afternoon killed one person and injured four others, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The accident happened in the northbound lanes of the 610 West Loop near Post Oak Boulevard at about 12:45 p.m.

Officials said the driver of a Lincoln apparently tried to exit to Interstate 10, but hit the barrier.

"The flatbed hits that vehicle. Then, the 18-wheeler hits the flatbed. The flatbed continues and hits the guardrail and hits the oncoming vehicle northbound," said Assistant Chief Rick Flanagan, with the Houston Fire Department.

The driver of the vehicle hit head-on died at the scene. Four others were taken to area hospitals. Their conditions were not released.

"It was happening so quickly. I can't even express how fast it happened," said Norm Wigington, with TxDOT. "Had my window been open, I would have burned the hair on my arm."

All lanes were shut down for hours following the accident. The lanes were reopened by 6 p.m.

Traffic, which was heavy in the area, was diverted onto feeder roads.
