CONROE, Texas – An 84-year-old female inmate at the Montgomery County Jail has confessed to a plot to hire a hit man to kill a Montgomery County prosecutor and assault a district attorney.
Texas Rangers arrested and charged Dorothy Canfield with solicitation to commit capital murder and solicitation to commit aggravated assault on a public servant in a plot to kill Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Robert Freyer and have Montgomery County Elected District Attorney Brett Ligon assaulted.

Based on information provided by an informant, Texas Rangers began to monitor communications by Canfield from the Montgomery County jail where she is serving time for second degree felony of theft, officials said.
Based upon her request to hire a hit man, Canfield was provided with the name and telephone number of an undercover Harris County District Attorney investigator who met with Canfield at the Montgomery County jail. During the conversation, Canfield agreed to pay the undercover officer $5,000 to kill Freyer and $2,500 to put Ligon in the hospital for "two to three weeks," according to law enforcement officials.
Texas Rangers who interviewed Canfield said that although they showed the inmate pictures from an unrelated crime scene and pretended that Freyer had actually been killed, the woman did not show "remorse."
"Dorothy Canfield hoped to capitalize on the tragic murder of the Kaufman County District Attorney, his wife and Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse to disrupt the prosecution of her theft charge in the most violent way possible," said Ligon. "We look forward to requesting a Montgomery County jury to give Ms. Canfield the justice she deserves."
More details are set to be released at a press conference Monday at 1 p.m. at the Montgomery County Sherriff's Office.
