HOUSTON -- A store that has withstood the test of time is closing its doors for good, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.
Cactus Music & Video, located at 2930 S. Shepherd Drive at Alabama, will close after 30 years in business.
"It's just kind of time to give it up," owner Bud Daily said. "The music business has changed so much with downloading and copying and whatever."
With no family to pass the business on to, Daily decided to close instead of selling to a chain.
Daily and his brother originally created the store as an outlet for Texas artists to sell their music.
"Every Texas artist at some point has done a performance here. In fact, we were the launch pad for any new release from a Texas recording artist," manager Quinn Bishop said.
With a huge and unique inventory, no one in town could beat it. Cactus also quickly became known for its amazing customer service.
"We've had some fantastic managers. We've had some fantastic sales people," Daily said.
Bishop started as a clerk 20 years ago. He will close the store as its manager.
"It's really been touching how many people have fond memories of shopping here with their parents or meeting an artist here," he said.
Store shelves are quickly becoming bare as customers come for one last Cactus shopping experience.
"We always come here because you can find fun and interesting things," customer Cathy Mitchell said.
"I always stop by when I'm in this area. It's kind of a bummer that they're closing," customer John Chandler said.
But it's time to move on.
"It's important to go out on a high note and maybe not sell to a national chain or somebody that would just use that brand and diminish its value in the market," Bishop said.
"I think Houston will miss them. I think it is unfortunately one of those things that Houston won't miss until it's gone," customer Jennifer Rantz said.
The store will be open until March 31.
