Saturday's Protest Just A Warm-Up
Thousands of people gathered Sunday to protest the arrival of Taiwan's president, Chen Shui-Bian.
Protesters Gather At Enron To Voice Views
Shui-Bian's brief stop in the city has sparked a debate among many.
Some people who gathered to see the president were cheering, while others were jeering.
Some protesters almost broke through a barricade Saturday when he arrived.
Houstonians for an independent Taiwan rallied on one side of the barricades.
Taiwan is fighting to be an independent, free country away from Chinese influence.
"We have a democratic-elected president and a party system," Taiwan supporter Ed Hsu said. "We have a free press."
On the other side of the fence stood a highly-charged crowd waving flags. The group is against Taiwan's fight for freedom.
Chinese nationalists are protesting the visit.
"He is trying to get support from Congress, from the media and public and get people behind his agenda," John Ma, supporter of one China, said. "We are standing out to make our voice heard. We are the majority of Chinese people against Taiwan independence."
