Investigation Into City Hall Bonus Scandal Widens

District Attorney's Office Investigators Seize Thousands Of Documents

UPDATED: 5:15 pm CST March 14, 2006

Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal said Tuesday that the investigation into the Mayor Pro Tem's Office bonus scandal is widening to other city officials and departments, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Investigators with the District Attorney's Office seized thousands of documents from the Mayor Pro Tem's Office on Tuesday.

"I have just been advised that the District Attorney's Office came and asked for records from the Mayor Pro Tem's Office and, obviously, we made those records available," acting Mayor Pro Tem Michael Berry said.

KPRC Local 2 learned from a source close to the investigation that among the thousands of documents seized during two trips to the office on Tuesday are budget items and Carol Alvarado's scheduling memos.

Personal financial documents belonging to Rosie Hernandez, one of four employees fired because of the investigation, were also confiscated, the source told KPRC Local 2.

The items were removed from a file cabinet that was reported as being damaged last week, a week after the scandal was uncovered and the locks on the doors of the office were changed. Authorities have not yet determined if someone tried to break into the filing cabinet.

Rosenthal said there are no specific allegations but did give a general example of what he is looking for among the documents after a phone call he received shed new light on what information might have been stored in that filing cabinet.

"There may be documents in the file cabinets in the Mayor Pro Tem's Office that would disappear if they weren't seized," Rosenthal said.

A spokesman for Carol Alvarado said the councilwoman supports the District Attorney's Office investigation.

Rosenthal has not said what other city officials or departments might be added to the investigation.
