Fight Breaks Out At Spring ISD High School

New Orleans Students Say Spring Students Jumped Them

UPDATED: 2:06 pm CST February 15, 2006

A large brawl broke out at a Spring Independent School District high school Wednesday morning.

KPRC Local 2 reported that several Westfield High School students who are Hurricane Katrina evacuees called their parents in a panic before school started, asking them to come to the school, located at 16713 Ella Blvd. near F.M. 1960.

Several students told KPRC Local 2 that they ran out of the school after local students jumped them before classes began.

"As soon as we got to school, it was like the whole school full of Houston kids surrounded us and we just started fighting. Better stated, it was a riot," evacuee student Jasmine Woods told KPRC Local 2.

Officials with Spring ISD said the fight started between two female students over growing tensions between local and evacuee students, and quickly escalated into a brawl involving more than a dozen students.

"We deal with situations every day in our school district. We want all of our schools to be a safe and secure place. We require students to respect one another and to obey the rules," Spring ISD superintendent Ralph Draper told KPRC Local 2.

Spring ISD police helped break up the fight and restore order to the school. Several evacuees students told KPRC Local 2 that they were suspended from school due to their involvement in the brawl.

School officials said the school day would resume as normal, and that addition security officers would not be brought on campus because additional officers were placed at the school shortly after hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Several students told KPRC Local 2 that there was a fight between evacuees and local students in the cafeteria on Friday.

Officials have not yet released any other information about Wednesday's incident or confirmed if there was a fight at the school on Friday.

No injuries were reported.
