70-year-old woman carjacked outside pet store in Conroe

Man had gun, demanded her keys

CONROE, Texas – Police say a 70-year-old woman was carjacked outside the PetSmart pet store in the 2900 block of I-45.

Trudie Underwood had just parked her SUV when a man approached her driver's side door.

"He grabbed my arm and started pulling me out of the car," Underwood said. "Then he put a gun to my face and said, 'Give me the keys.'"

Underwood said it all happened so fast she didn't have to react to or to be scared. She handed over the keys to her 2003 Chevy Tahoe and the man took off.

Underwood said he didn't even try to grab her purse.

"I was just shocked," she said. "I couldn't believe it."

There isn't a good description of the suspect but Conroe police are keeping an eye for Underwood's vehicle, with Texas license plate number ACO-1948.

"Unfortunately in situations like this, there's not a whole lot you cane do," said Sgt. Dorcy Riddle. "Except be vigilant of your surroundings, be aware of what's going on before you exit your vehicle."

Underwood said that would be her advice to others and be careful where you park. She said getting the closest spot may not be the safest if there are cars all around that block your view and make it hard to see what's happening.

"Be aware of who's around you and where you're parking," said Underwood.
