A police chase in southwest Houston ended in a crash Friday morning that critically injured a boy, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Officers were following a stolen black sport utility vehicle when it swerved into oncoming traffic and hit another vehicle head-on at White Cap Lane at Beechnut Street at 8:50 a.m., ending the pursuit.

The force of the accident ejected 12-year-old Kyndall Baptiste from the backseat of the other vehicle. A LifeFlight helicopter transferred him to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition. He was placed on life support, officials said. The driver, Natasha Baptiste, was taken to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, where her condition was not released.

Witness Describes Accident

"We were going to attempt to pin the vehicle in a particular parking lot. As officers were reporting to the scene as backup, the vehicle fled," said Capt. Dwayne Ready, with the Houston Police Department.

"The little boy was laying down on the ground," witness Michelle Bailey said. "I saw (the driver) jump out the black truck and started running with her arms in the air and they caught her over there and started beating her down on the ground."

The chase began two miles away near Bellaire Boulevard at Jetty Lane at about 8:40 a.m. Four women were inside the SUV, but three bailed out at some point during the chase. Two of them were taken into custody and a third escaped.

The woman police were chasing, Dominique Bromon, 18, was wanted on two warrants out of Houston and Harris County Precinct 5, officials said. There's no word on the exact charges. Bromon now faces felony evading arrest and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle charges.

Police apprehended Dominique Bromon, the 18-year-old driver of the sport utility vehicle, at the scene.

Last week, HPD's pursuit policy was questioned when a 90-minute chase ended in a crash as the driver drove the wrong way on a freeway entrance ramp.

Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt said Friday that a review of the policy is under way, but there may not be any changes. He believes in the supervisor's discretion in calling off a chase.

He was asked about Friday's crash.

"Let me ask you this question. If we had not chased the individual, is there a guarantee that he would have stopped and not (hurt) the 12-year-old?" Hurtt said. "If you really look at it, we have pursuits every day in this city, and the last two in the last week or so. We've had two, including this one today, that's brought a lot of attention. But we've had a number of them that have been very successful."

Hurtt said the department is criticized when officers are involved in a chase and when they do not pursue a suspect.

It's not known when the review of the pursuit policy will be completed.
