HOUSTON -- A bulletproof vest helped save the life of an undercover Houston police officer serving a warrant at a southeast Houston home Wednesday night, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Officials with the Houston Police Department said a man being served a drug warrant opened fire on several undercover Houston police officers shortly after 10 p.m. at a home in the 4200 block of Dawson Lane near Scott Street.
Police said the 19-year-old suspect fired one shot before dropping his gun after two undercover officers busted through the front door of the home and caught him by surprise.
"The shot fortunately struck him in the vest. At this time, he's being treated but the wound is not serious. He's being checked out," Houston Police Department Capt. Jay Jones said.
The officer, who suffered a bruise, was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Officers said they found crack cocaine inside the home and a camera pointed at the front door that allowed the suspect to see the officers approaching his home.
The suspect was arrested and is facing several charges.
